Telugu Vivāha Vēḍuka

The Telugu Wedding Ceremony

(Telugu: తెలుగు వివాహ వేడుక, Telugu Vivāha Vēḍuka) is the traditional wedding ceremony of the Telugu people in India. In the 19th century, the ceremony could last up to 16 days (Padahaaru Rojula Panduga). In modern times, it can last 5 or more days, depending on the family's financial and social status.

Vivaham or Wedding

Considered the strongest of social bonds, is said to spiritually merge two souls opening the doors to "Gruhastaashramam" (household life). As per a Telugu saying, "marriage is supposed to be a family union and not an individual formality".

BEFORE WEDDING

Pelli Chuupulu:

The parents of the bride and the groom arrange for a meeting of the two in a controlled environment, this is very important for the two as they start a new life together. During this time the two get to know about each other’s likes and dislikes and bond with each other and develop and understanding about each other. This is the most memorable moment in anyone's life.

Niśchitārtham (నిశ్చితార్థం):

This is the engagement, where the wedding is officially ‘fixed.’ But it’s not just as simple as an exchange of rings. It is quite a grand event, where both families get together and decide upon the wedding date and time (muhurtham) based on horoscopes and planetary positions. Gifts are exchanged and the Bride (Vadhuvu) in particular is lavished with clothes, jewelry, and silverware.

Pellikuthuru:

This ritual is the start of the actual wedding prep, where the Bride (Vadhuvu) and Groom (Varadu) get ready to look their best on their special day. The Pellikuthuru is held separately at the Bride (Vadhuvu)’s and Groom (Varadu)’s homes, where close family members smear them with oil and turmeric. The intention is to make the skin glow, so that the Bride (Vadhuvu) and Groom (Varadu) literally outshine the others on their wedding day!

Snātakaṃ (స్నాతకం):

This is a ritualistic bath for the Groom (Varadu) that has its roots in ancient times. Early Brahmins had an organized system where boys were first given their sacred threads, and then sent away to learn scriptures from sages or wise men. On their return, they were made to perform the Snatakam, which meant that their education was complete and they were now ready for greater responsibilities like starting a family. Today, this ritual signifies the readiness of the Groom (Varadu) for marriage and is concluded by the wearing of a silver thread.

Kāśī Yātra (కాశీ యాత్ర):

The Kashi yatra ceremony is a playful take on this where the Groom (Varadu) pretends to leave for Kashi, renouncing worldly pleasures like marriage. The Bride (Vadhuvu)’s brother requests him to stay back and marry his sister, offering him gifts in the process. After a bit of good-natured teasing, the Groom (Varadu) relents and agrees to marry the insistent young man’s sister!

WEDDING DAY

Maṅgaḷa Snānaṃ

(మఙ్గళస్నానం):

It’s D-day, and it begins with a Mangala Snaanam at the Bride (Vadhuvu)’s and Groom (Varadu)’s houses separately, and is literally translates as ‘auspicious bath.’ This bath is essential before any of the other rituals can be performed. The bath is followed by family members anointing the Bride (Vadhuvu) and Groom (Varadu) with oil and performing an aarti to keep them safe from evil eyes, and to seek God’s blessings through all the wedding proceedings.

Aarti or Hārati (హారతి):

After the holy bath, the Bride (Vadhuvu) and the Groom (Varadu) are applied oil in their respective houses. After this, their families perform an aarti and pray for the couple's happy life together.

Gauri Pūja గౌరీ పూజ:

This is a pooja performed by the Bride (Vadhuvu) to the Goddess Gauri. One reason for this is because she represents fertility, and the other is because her bond with her husband Lord Shiva is considered an ideal that married couples should strive for. The Bride (Vadhuvu) prays for similar blessings in her future life with her new husband.

Ganēśa Pūja గణేశ పూజ:

While the Gauri Pooja is in progress, the Groom (Varadu) performs a Ganesh Pooja at the wedding venue, on the mandapam or platform. Most auspicious occasions begin with a Ganesh pooja, since Lord Ganesh is believed to dispel darkness and remove obstacles in one’s path. The Groom (Varadu) prays for a bright future and a successful, hassle-free marriage with his new wife.

Varagamanam:

Arrival of Bride (Vadhuvu) Groom (Varadu). The Bride (Vadhuvu) Groom (Varadu) is greeted and welcomed by Bride (Vadhuvu)'s family and escorted to Ritualistic Enclosure (Pelli Mandapam)

Punya Vachanam:

The Purification Rite) wherein the Groom (Varadu) invokes water from all rivers and oceans and this is purified by Veda Mantra and used during wedding Ceremony.

Rakshabandanam:

A sacred yellow thread is tied in Bride (Vadhuvu) and Groom (Varadu) Varadus' wrist to protect from external obstacles.

Kanyādānaṃ (కన్యాదానం):

Giving the Bride (Vadhuvu) away. The Bride (Vadhuvu)s' father washes the Groom (Varadu)'s feet and requests him to accept his daughter as his wife.

Terasalla:

The actual wedding ceremony begins here. The Bride (Vadhuvu) is seated in a basket lined with rice. Rice being the staple diet of the state is considered a sign of prosperity and often features in auspicious occasions like weddings. Her maternal uncles carry her to the mandapam in the basket. However, she is not allowed to look at the Groom (Varadu) and vice versa, so a curtain or terasalla is placed between the two of them that stays on till the ceremony is over.

Jīlakarra Bellaṃ (జీలకర్రాబెల్లం):

Here, the Bride (Vadhuvu) and the Groom (Varadu) apply a paste of jeera (cumin) and jaggery on each other’s hands from under the curtain. This ritual denotes their inseparable and unbreakable bond.

Madhuparkaṃ మధుపర్కం:

The priests chant and pray for a prosperous and successful marriage, and ask the Gods to remove any deficiencies in the couple. The Bride (Vadhuvu) and Groom (Varadu) now leave the mandapam to change into white cotton clothes with red borders. The white is indicative of purity, while the red represents strength – signifying traits like loyalty and strength that are essential to any marriage. After changing into their new clothes, the Bride (Vadhuvu) and Groom (Varadu) return to the mandapam for the next set of rituals.

Sumangaḷi (సుమంగళి):

This ritual sees a group of married women or sumangalis proceeding towards the mandapam, carrying trays of lamps made with rice flour, sugar, and milk along with two trays of rice. The lamps are lit, and meant to embody sweetness along with light in the marriage with the rice representing prosperity in the new couple’s life. The Mangalsutram is placed on top of the rice.

Maṅgaḷasūtra Dhāraṇa :

During this ritual, the curtain between the couple is removed and the Groom (Varadu) ties Mangala Sutra around the Bride (Vadhuvu)'s neck with 3 knots declaring that she is his wife. This signifies their mental, physical and spiritual union with each other.

Akshitalu (అక్షితలు):

Married people witnessing this occasion come forward to bless the couple, by sprinkling flower petals and rice coated with turmeric powder.

Talaṃbrālu:

In this ritual, the Bride (Vadhuvu) and the Groom (Varadu) pour pearls or turmeric coloured rice on each other’s head. They cup their hands and hold rice in it. The couple then slides the rice over each other’s head as a priest recites mantras.

Kanyadaan Akshata:

The Bride (Vadhuvu) and Groom (Varadu) exchange garlands, followed by prayers to Agni, God of fire.

Saptapadi (సప్తపది):

Sapta means seven, padi means step, and this ritual is associated with taking seven steps around the sacred fire. To begin, the free end of the Bride (Vadhuvu)’s pallu is tied with one end of the Groom (Varadu)’s shawl. The fire is meant to destroy all evils and to act as a witness to the holy ceremony. After circumambulating the sacred fire, the Bride (Vadhuvu) and Groom (Varadu) hold hands and take seven steps, representative of the seven vows of marriage in Hindu tradition.

Sthālīpākaṃ (స్థాలీపాకం):

The wedding ceremony is finalized with the Groom (Varadu) putting on silver toe rings on the second toes of his wife’s feet.

Ashirvadam:

Newlyweds receive Blessings from priest, family and friends.

Appagintalu (అప్పగింతలు):

Appagintalu take place right at the end of the wedding. This is when the Bride (Vadhuvu) is traditionally handed off to the Groom (Varadu) and his family.
